Elaine Barker – Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) & Myofascial Release Therapist

I haven’t always been a therapist, but changes to my own health 3 years ago led me on a journey of discovery into how massage, particularly fascial release can help the body heal.
TMJ syndrome is pain of the Jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull in the front ear, and controls the muscles relating to eating, talking, smiling – because the TMJ joint is the main connective muscle of the head and neck area.

Symptoms of TMJ Syndrome include:

  • Jaw, neck, face or shoulder pain
  • Clicking or locking of the Jaw
  • Dizziness or vertigo, headaches
  • Tinnitus or trouble sleeping
  • Ear-ache or blocked sinuses without the presence of infection
  • “Glop in the throat” or the sensation of something being stuck
  • Unevenly worn teeth
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Twitching of the face or eye muscles
  • Trismus (difficulty opening mouth normally)

TMJ Therapy ® is a specialised protocol for getting people out of pain and restriction in less than 6 treatments. I am also qualified to offer specialist head, neck and mouth massage for patients who have head/ neck cancer or who are in remission.

Myofascial Release is a safe and effective hands on treatment, useful for treating skeletal muscle immobility and pain. It works on the basis of feeling for trigger points in the neck, shoulder and pelvis muscles which are responsible for or contributing to pain, and using sustained pressure, with hands, or hot/cold stones to relax contracted muscles. Subject to an individual’s preference I can also use essential oils in any treatment.

Both TMJ Therapy and Myofascial release therapy work on the basis of manipulating the bodies fascial tissue. Fascial tissue is the band or sheet of connective tissues including the collagen which lie beneath the skin, and attaches, stabilizes, encloses and separates muscles and other internal organs. The technique of manipulating the fascia back to its original state forms the basic principal of The Blend Fascial Facial ®. This is a non-surgical face lift therapy, which releases the restrictions of the fascia which cause wrinkles and sagging and firms up fascial muscles.

I am qualified and insured to work with essential oils, and hot and cold stones, and can either use these as part of a TMJ or fascial facial treatment or as part of a relaxing massage.

I will be at The Torus Wellbeing Clinic on Saturdays. Contact me on 07702084168 for an informal discussion about the therapies I offer or to book an appointment.
